Variegated Rope Plant Hoya

The Variegated Rope Plant is a fantastic-looking succulent with many aliases. Scientifically named Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta Variegata’, this plant also goes by Hindu Rope Hoya, Krinkle Kurl Plant, Porcelain Flower, and Wax Plant. This vining tropical has long stems of crinkled, curled leaves and produces amazingly sweet-scented flowers. Of the over 900 varieties and cultivars of Hoya, Variegated Rope Plant is one of the easiest for new houseplant gardeners to master.

Best Locations For Growing Variegated Rope Plant

Rope Plant is compact and looks great placed on a low shelf or in a hanging basket where the leaves can be seen close up. Used as a specimen or part of a collection, this plant provides great contrast to more typical houseplant foliage. Variegated Rope Plant is not considered to be toxic.

Variegated Rope Plant Sunlight Requirements

Bright light is what succulents crave for compact growth. Low light levels encourage the stems to stretch to the light and become leggy. Place Rope Plant near a south-facing window. East- and west-facing windows with at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day are also acceptable. Like all succulents, Hoya needs regular pot rotation for even growth.

Variegated Rope Plant Care

Use fast-draining indoor potting soil with extra perlite or sharp sand added to pot up Rope Plant. Hanging baskets should have removable saucers to catch excess moisture. Hoyas do not like to sit in standing water. Leggy growth can be cut back in the spring when the plant starts active growth.

Watering Variegated Rope Plant

Rope Plant stores a lot of water in the leaves and can be considered drought tolerant. When the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry, water thoroughly, letting the excess drain away. Watering once every 2-3 weeks is typical and will depend on the humidity level around the plant. Low humidity gives the Rope Plant a dull, matte look, while high humidity gives the leaves a glossier appearance. Use a portable humidifier or pebble tray to keep the humidity around 50%.

Feeding Variegated Rope Plant

Fertilize with a formulation for succulents and cacti. The balance of NPK should approach 1-2-4, intended to encourage more robust root growth over dense foliage. Dilute a liquid fertilizer to half the manufacturer’s recommendation and apply once a month during the spring and summer.
